- Do not eat or smoke before shoveling. Caffienated drinks can increase the heart rate and cause blood vessel constriction.
- Pace yourself and take frequent breaks.
- Stay hydrated - drink water!
- Spread sand or salt over the shoveling area to reduce the amount of ice.
- Wear a hat.
- Layer your clothing.
- Wear proper insulated boots.
- Choose gloves that are water resistant.
- Use a shovel that has a plastic blade - these are not as heavy as the metal blades.
- Get a shovel that can push the snow.
- Stretch your muscles - warmed up muscles work better and do not become sore as easily.
- Practice proper hand placement - don't hold your hands too close together.
- Maintain proper posture - do not arch your back.
- Do not throw snow over your shoulder - throw the snow forward.
- Clear the snow as soon as it falls - fresh snow is lighter.
If you are feeling faint or any kind of pain, STOP!
