- Be aware of which areas of your home (i.e. basement, crawl spaces, unheated rooms, etc.) are most vulnerable to freezing.
- Look for pipes that are not insulated and wrap them with pipe insulation available at hardware stores.
- If there is heat tape on exposed pipes, check to make sure it is still functional. Inspect the tape for cracks.
- Make everyone in the home aware of where the main water shut-off valve is. Check the main shut-off valve to make sure it is working properly.
- Turn off all outside faucets and drain the lines.
- Drain any hoses and air conditioner pipes and check for excess water pooled in equipment.
- Keep the water heater temperature around 120 degrees. Lowering temperature to 120 degress can reduce water costs by 6 to 10 percent.
- Turn off and drain your lawn sprinkler system.
- If you are going away from your home during an extended period of time in the winter, consider having a plumber drain your system. If your furnace stops working there won't be any water in your pipes to freeze.

Thank you for the cold weather tips. I know how much of a hassle it can be if a pip breaks during the winter. Many calgary plumbers deal with these situations. This was a great site to find simple tips, like insulating pipes to solve these cold weather problems.

Last year, we had our pipes freeze. It was awful. No running water, part of it almost burst, it was extremely stressful. I'm going to follow through with these tips, as well as get some professional help. I figure, it can't hurt to have a plumber come give his input. Maybe I'll call http://allrightplumbingandhvac.com/Services/
We've been looking into getting a plumber to come check out a pipe under our sink. It's been leaking like crazy! Hopefully we can get this taken care of soon before it causes water damage.
