Today’s water heaters, boilers, furnaces and air conditioning systems are sophisticated pieces of
equipment. Many families rely on these gas appliances to provide comfort, with a sense of safety
throughout the year.

As a result of the destructive powers of Hurricane Irene, many of these natural gas appliances have
been exposed or submerged for long periods of time in flood waters, causing extensive damage.
These flood waters, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, contain potentially
dangerous materials, such as raw sewage, high levels of bacteria and mold spores, agricultural runoff
and infectious chemicals from industrial areas. “Reusing a hot water heater, boiler, furnace or air
conditioning system after it’s been exposed to contaminated flood waters can create fire, explosion
and carbon monoxide hazards in the home”.

According to the Air-Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI), a national trade
association of manufacturers of residential, commercial and industrial appliances and equipment,
components and related products, recommends that any flood-damaged heating and cooling
equipment be replaced immediately, not repaired.

With the summer season finally upon us we want to remind you of the importance of servicing your air conditioning system.

The least expensive way to maintain your cooling system is to change the air filter. Air pollutants and dirt can clog the filter and can cause damage to your health and the equipment.

The filter can be found in a compartment that is covered by a strip of metal that slides in place.
The filter's size can be found on the side of the filter.
Take these measurements to a local home improvement store to purchase the properly sized filter for your system.
To help keep track of when you have changed your filter tape a piece of paper to the side of the equipment and write down the date.

To keep your system running efficiently it is advised to change the filters at least once a year.

Pace yourself and take frequent breaks.

Layer your clothing.
Wear proper insulated boots.
Choose gloves that are water resistant.
Use a shovel that has a plastic blade - these are not as heavy as the metal blades.
Get a shovel that can push the snow.
Stretch your muscles - warmed up muscles work better and do not become sore as easily.
Practice proper hand placement - don't hold your hands too close together.

Checklist for Homebuyers

Upon buying a new home approximately 44% of homebuyers do not inspect the plumbing system in the home. Within one year of purchasing the home they end up calling a plumber.
Checklist for homebuyers:
Bathroom
-Flush the toilet and check to see how fast the water goes down, and the pressure of the water.
-Press the tiles around the bathtub to check for loose or leaky tiles. If the area is soft there may be water damage.
-Stand over the toilet and rock back and forth, if the floor moves there may be rotting caused by past water damage.
-Check for spots or stains around the base of the toilet.
Water Heater
-Check for rust around the water heater tank.
-Check the date on the water heater. Water heaters over 15 years old, should be replaced. You can check the date by looking at the serial number. The first four numbers are the month and year.
Water Supply Piping
-Turn both the bath tub and faucet on at the same time. If there is a sufficient reduction in the water volume there may be calcium and mineral deposits, potentially meaning the pipes need to be replaced.
-Check over the exposed piping in the basement for stains or rusting.
-Be sure that the main line cleanout is accessible

Weak Shower Pressure?

If your shower’s stream is weak, consider that the water pressure may also be in use elsewhere. It could be a filling toilet tank, the dishwasher, washing machine, or your sprinkler system. If you still have ample pressure at the other faucets in your house, your shower head may be clogged by hard water deposits. If the blockage is severe, you must remove and clean the shower head. If the blockage is not too severe, you may be able to clean it in place. To clean it in place, pour a cup of vinegar into a plastic bag, place the bag over the shower head, and secure it with a twist tie. Leave it there overnight. In the morning, remove the bag and use a toothbrush to gently scrub the softened deposits from the holes. If the stream is still weak (even after taking apart the shower head) you should call a professional plumber to locate the clog and clean it.

Cold Weather Plumbing Tips

Be aware of which areas of your home (i.e. basement, crawl spaces, unheated rooms, etc.) are most vulnerable to freezing.

Look for pipes that are not insulated and wrap them with pipe insulation available at hardware stores.

If there is heat tape on exposed pipes, check to make sure it is still functional. Inspect the tape for cracks.

Make everyone in the home aware of where the main water shut-off valve is. Check the main shut-off valve to make sure it is working properly.

Turn off all outside faucets and drain the lines.

Drain any hoses and air conditioner pipes and check for excess water pooled in equipment.

Keep the water heater temperature around 120 degrees. Lowering temperature to 120 degress can reduce water costs by 6 to 10 percent.

Turn off and drain your lawn sprinkler system.

If you are going away from your home during an extended period of time in the winter, consider having a plumber drain your system. If your furnace stops working there won't be any water in your pipes to freeze.

How to winterize your outside faucets

In many homes there is a separate shutoff in the basement for the outside faucets. If this is the cases shut it off then go outside and turn on all the outside faucets to drain the water. Leave all the outside faucets on and go back and check the outside shutoff valve for a plug or cap on the valve. Turn this cap so that the water drains from the valve. Tighten the cap and turn off all the outside faucets.

How a Water Softener works

A water softener is necessary when a home has “hard water”. Hard water contains an abundance of calcium or magnesium. This can cause two major problems. It can make “scale” form on the inside of the pipes. The calcium and magnesium permeate out of the water and stick to the pipes; this reduces the flow through the pipes causing the pipes to eventually clog. Another problem caused by scale is it reacts with soap to form a scum and reduces the soap’s ability to lather; this is turn makes showering less effective.

A water softener replaces the calcium and magnesium ions in the water with sodium ions. To replace the ions the water in the home runs through a chemical matrix or through a small bed of plastic beads. These beads are covered with sodium ions. The beads only contain calcium or magnesium and eventually stop softening the water.
Next regeneration takes places: the beads are soaked in a stream of sodium ions. The water softener creates a brine solution and flushes it through the beads. The brine replaces all of the calcium and magnesium that was built up with sodium. The leftover brine and all of them calcium and magnesium are flushed out through a drain pipe.

Check your home’s water pressure to make sure it is below 80 pounds per square inch. Anything above this number can be destructive to your home’s plumbing system and lead to an over usage of water.

During a time when you are not using any water check your water meter. Re-check the meter reading again after eight hours. If the meter is different it may mean there is a water leak that needs to be fixed.

Over 40 percent of your home’s water usage is due to flushing your toilets. By installing a new flapper and fill valve it will help your toilets run more efficiently.

A new showerhead can help you save up to 7.5 gallons of water per minute while showering and will not effect your water pressure.

Repairing all your leaky faucets can save up to 150 gallons worth of wasted water each day, and 4,500 gallons per month.

Toilet Tragedies

When a toilet in your home backs up, fails to flush, leaks, or continues to run it becomes a major problem for all members of your household. We have provided a few quick-fix tips to getting to the bottom of your bowl.

Clogging
A plunger will not always fix your toilet clogging problem, but usually a toilet auger will do the trick. If neither of these unclogging methods are successful it is time to call Russo Bros. & Co. If your toilet clogs frequently you may need to assess the items you are flushing down your toilet or upgrade to a power-flush model.

Leaking
Water on the floor around your toilet could be due to: a leak in the water pipes, a broken toilet gasket, condensation from the tank, or a jarred toilet assembly. Check for any visible leaks on the outside of the bowl and for condensation. If the leak is inside the toilet you may need to call Russo Bros. & Co.

Running
A running toilet is usually the most manageable toilet problem. First, lift the lid off of your toilet. Usually it is a broken seal that prevents the toilet valve from allowing water into it after the tank refills. Another common occurrence is that the flap valve or chain has worn out or broken. Before performing any work make sure to shut off the toilet’s water supply. If the problem seems out of your control or you find that you have taken your toilet apart and are unable to reassemble it give Russo Bros. & Co. a call and we will perform an emergency visit to your home.

Longing for a hot shower…

Is your shower not running hot water? Are you experiencing only cold water running through all of your faucets and fixtures or is it just your shower? This constant cold water flow could be due to a number of different issues.

If all of the fixtures in your home are having cold-water issues, the water heater in your home could be the problem. First, begin by checking your water heater’s temperature to see if it is set on the proper setting. If the heater is an electric model, check for a blown fuse. If the heater is a gas unit the pilot light may need to be relit. After relighting the pilot light, if there is still no hot water there could either be an impediment in the flue, a malfunctioning part, a defective temperature control or a buildup of sediment.

The pipes in your shower could be another cause for a lack of hot water. Unless your home has copper piping, which hardly ever corrodes, you may need to inspect and replace your galvanized steel pipes. The issue may also be that you need to check your hot water valve. If your hot water valve is only slightly open or not open at all you will need to widen the opening.

After checking the water heater and pipes if you do not find anything wrong the problem could also lie in the valve in your shower. After time the rubber parts in the valve become worn out, they may begin to bulge and block the waterways. When the water temperature passing through the valve increases the valve enlarges, this leads to parts falling off and obstructing the hot water valve.

Have a Drain that Always Clogs?

If you have a drain that continuously becomes clogged, you're not alone. At least one in five homes has a similar problem with a tub, shower, sink, toilet, or drain. If you're like most people, you've probably used a plunger or poured a chemical down the drain to free the blockage.

Cold Weather Tips to Save Your Pipes, pt II

Last week we went over some tips to protect your home before cold weather sets in. This week we're going to continue with tips for when temperatures get menacingly low.

When temperatures fall below zero:

Allow a small trickle of water to run overnight to keep pipes from freezing.
Open cabinet doors to expose pipes to warmer room temperatures to keep them from freezing.

What do you do if your pipes freeze?

Shut off the water immediately. Don't attempt to thaw frozen pipes unless the water is shut off. Freezing can often cause unseen cracks in pipes or joints that will leak when thawed.
Apply heat to a frozen pipe by warming the air around it, or by applying heat directly to a pipe. You can use a hair dryer, space heater, or hot water. Be sure not to leave space heaters unattended, and avoid the use of kerosene heaters or open flames.
Once the pipes have thawed, turn the water back on slowly and check for cracks and leaks.

Cold Weather Tips to Save Your Pipes

Before cold weather sets in:

Know what areas of your home, such as basements, crawl spaces, unheated rooms, and outside walls, are most vulnerable to freezing.
Eliminate sources of cold air near water lines by fixing windows, insulating walls, sealing cracks, closing off crawl spaces, and eliminating drafts near doors.
Make sure everyone in your household knows where your main water shut-off valve is. If a pipe freezes or bursts, shut the water off immediately.
Protect your pipes and water meter. Wrap exposed pipes with insulation or an electrical pipe heater. If your meter is located in a pit outside, keep the pit lid closed tightly and let any snow that falls cover it; snow acts as insulation, so don't disturb it.

The holidays are imminent, bringing together family, friends, and a few plumbing emergencies. Many Americans take part in holiday celebrations with 10 or more guests. These additional guests put a strain on your home's plumbing system, which results in more emergency calls to plumbing and drain companies like us.

Big holiday meals require a busy kitchen. Too much grease and food finds their way into the kitchen drain or disposer. Holiday guests also equate to extra showers, bath, and lots of extra toilet flushes. It all adds up to potential plumbing disasters.

Pipes clog because of gradual buildup of grease, hair, soap, food particles, etc. All it takes is one major overload, like a house full of guests, to exasperate the situation and cause a clogged drain. Follow these tips to avoid having to call us in an emergency:

In the kitchen:

-Avoid pouring fats or cooking oils down the drain, because liquid fats solidify in the pipes and cause clogs. Wipe congealed grease from pots.

-Never put hard-to-grind, stringy, fibrous waste into the garbage disposer (poultry skins, carrots, celery, pumpkin pulp, banana peels). The disposer can't sufficiently grind these items and they will clog your sink drain.

-Run cold water down the drain for about 15 seconds before and after using the garbage disposer to flush waste down the main line.

-Turn on the disposer before adding food debris.

-Run the dishwasher and washing mechanism at night or at off times to conserve water temperature and pressure for your guests.

Lower your heating bill

To help lower your heating bill follow these tips:

Set your thermostat to 70 degrees or lower during the day.
Lower the temperature at night or when you are not at home. For every one degree you set your thermostat back you save 1-3% on your annual heating costs.
Consider installing a humidifier. Humid air feels warmer than dry air and increasing the humidity in your home will help you resist winter colds and moisturizes dry skin.
Install an automatic setback thermostat that can be programmed to turn the temperature up and down at preset times.

Halloween is approaching and pumpkins are aplenty. If you're going to make pumpkin pie be careful where you dispose of the pumpkin pulp. The pulp and seeds don't break down like most foods - instead, the pulp and seeds harden and can clog your drain. Don't flush them down the drain or garbage disposal! Save energy and be comfortable

Winter is about here and everyone is turning on their heating systems. Here are a few tips to stay warm and still save energy:

Set back your thermostat by a few degrees at night and when you are away during the day. For each degree you lower your thermostat in winter you can save up to 5% on the heating portion of your energy bill.
Heat rises! Use ceiling fans on the reverse setting to force warm air near the ceiling back down into the room.
If you tend to spend most of your time in one area of your home, lower the thermostat and use a space heater.
The average home loses about 25% of heat through leaky windows, so seal around the windows with weatherstripping.
